- Bow or Stem. Front of a ship.
- Fore or Forward. Toward or at the front of a ship or further forward of a location.
- Stern. Rear of a ship.
- Aft. Toward the rear of a ship.
- Abaft. Toward or at the stern of a ship or further aft of a location.
- Centerline. An imaginary line drawn from the point of the bow to the center of the width of the stern.
- Amidships. Near the centerline of a ship.
- Athwartships. Toward the sides of a ship.
- Starboard. When facing forward along the centerline, everything to your right is starboard.
- Port. When facing forward along the centerline, everything to your left is port.
- Above. A higher deck.
- Below. A lower deck.
- Topside. The main weather deck.
- Aloft. The mast, stacks, rigging, or any other area above the highest solid structure.
