About arm attacks

Arm attacks are those that use the hand, wrist, forearm, or elbow as the striking surface. The primary arm attack is the punch.

A punch is a simple thing, even babies punch when upset. When a person is angered, a punch is usually the first physical thing that happens, usually directed at something or someone. Usually, the punching hand is injured as much as that which was struck, sometimes more. Punching may be highly effective if done properly. Some Taekwondo organizations, such as the World Taekwondo Federation (WTF), want to separate Taekwondo from its karate roots so they stress kicks and practically neglect the punches that are stressed in karate. However, to be a well-rounded fighter, you must be proficient with both your arms and legs.
